What is MailChimp?

MailChimp is a plugin that connects your WordPress site to MailChimp, so you will need to have a MailChimp account first. MailChimp is a newsletter service that allows you to send out email campaigns to a list of email subscribers. MailChimp is absolutely free for lists up to 2000 subscribers, which is why it is the go-to choice for both small and big businesses.

NOTE: You can skip this step if you have your MailChimp account created.

To create a MailChimp account, you should perform the following steps:

  1. Go to the official MailChimp site and click the Sign Up Free button in the top right corner to create a new account:

  2. In the appeared sign-in form fill in all required fields and push the Create My Account button:

  3. You will receive the confirmation message after the account is created (see the screenshot below):

  4. Open your mailbox (of the email address used for the account creating) and check Inbox messages. Open the message from MailChimp and click Activate Account button in it.

  5. You will be redirected to the profile settings page. Fill in all requested information and then click Save And Get Started button to log into your MailChimp account.

Creating a new list of subscribers

To create a new list of subscribers in your MaiChimp account, you should perform the following steps:

  1. Log into your MailChimp account, open Lists menu and click the Create List button:

  2. In the appeared form fill in all required fields and push Save button.

  3. The new list was successfully created. Now you can add your subscribers to this list and manage its settings.

MailChimp plugin installation

NOTE: You can skip this step if you have MailChimp plugin installed in your admin panel.

To install the MailChimp plugin, you should perform the following steps:

  1. In your WordPress admin panel navigate to Plugins menu and click Add New button.

  2. In the search field type in MailChimp for WP and submit the search:

  3. Click the Install Now button for the MailChimp for WordPress plugin and follow any necessary prompts on screen, then click Activate Plugin link.

Connecting to MailChimp

After ensuring the plugin was activated under Plugins -> Installed Plugins menu, you will see a new dashboard tab titled MailChimp for WP. Click it to set up the plugin.

  1. To connect your MailChimp account, you will need to enter your API keys into the necessary field:

    The plugin provides a convenient link (Get your API key here) below the field, which will direct you to the API key in your MailChimp account.

    NOTE: You must be logged into your MailChimp account for the link to work as expected.

  2. Click the Get your API key here link in the plugin settings or in your MailChimp account and follow these steps:

    • Click your profile name to expand the Account Panel, and choose Account.

    • Click the Extras drop-down menu and choose API keys:

  3. In Your API keys section copy an existing API key or click the Create A Key button. And paste the copied API key into the MailChimp API Key field in the plugin setting:

  4. Save the changes. The MailChimp status will be changed to Connected and you will be able to see your subscribers lists in the WordPress admin panel:
