Hello. People often ask me: ‘How do I choose a WordPress theme?’. That is a great question, but first — before getting to the WordPress theme, let’s talk about what WordPress engine itself would be.

What are WordPress engine and theme?

Think of WordPress as a skeleton in a human body — in this case WordPress theme would be the muscles and the skin in a human which grows on top of the skeleton, that holds our guts together and basically makes us who we are. That’s how people can differentiate them from each other. It is a very rough example but the point is just like in the human body the WordPress engine and the WordPress theme cannot exist without each other.

How can I get a theme?

There are a lot of places and providers you can acquire WordPress themes from. There are great wordpress templates, that you should pay for, and there are free WordPress Themes — there are thousands and thousands of them on the Internet, but I would personally not recommend you working with free WordPress themes, because they are sort of unstable and their providers do not offer support for these themes. As for the premium themes, the market is huge. It’s really enormous, there are hundreds of providers who sell the paid WordPress themes. They are TemplateMonster, Themeforest, Elegant Themes, Rocket Theme and a lot of the smaller ones. The biggest providers on market would be TemplateMonster and ThemeForest.

ThemeForest or TemplateMonster?

ThemeForest is a company which is basically a marketplace. It is the website that independent WordPress theme providers and producers come to and sell the products from. So basically ThemeForest does not provide any products from themselves. They just sell it on behalf of the sellers.

As for the TemplateMonster, it’s what you call a ‘full-cycle’ company. They produce their own WordPress themes, they have their in-house team of designers, developers, support team, billing team and so on. So basically this means for you like for an end-user that TemplateMonster provides a sort of a greater extent of control over the quality of the product. They provide their own support and bear responsibility for what they sell, whereas ThemeForest reserves the right not to provide the support for their themes and it’s actually their official position.

Only if you are a professional developer, you may get lucky and acquire good IT consulting WordPress themes which is professionally done, which is very individual and of high quality, but you have to know where you need to look for (on ThemeForest).
