This tutorial shows how to enable and manage Search module in Joomla 3.x.
Joomla 3.x. How to enable and manage search
Joomla Search module enables search among Categories, Contacts, Articles, Newsfeeds, Weblinks. You can setup the module via Joomla admin panel:

Navigate to the Joomla admin panel, go to Extensions -> Module manager tab. Click New and select Search from the list of modules.

Fill out the Title field, set Status to Published. The rest of the fields are optional. Box Label is the text that appears in the label of search box.
The Box Width field defines the number of characters in the Search field. The Box Text is the text that shows up in the field by default. Click the Save or Save&Close buttons to publish the module: -
You may also want to edit the Search results page:
Navigate to the Components -> Search tab in Joomla admin panel to maintain search results and search statistics. Click the Options button in the right top corner to see the available options. -
The Gather Search Statistics field allows checking what information users are looking for on your site.
The Use Search Areas field allows enabling/disabling search among Categories, Contacts, Articles, Newsfeeds, Weblinks.
You can use the Created Date option to Show or to Hide the date when the article was created in Search Results: -
When saving changes in the Search Component you’re redirected to the Search Manager: Search Term Analysis page. In case Gather Search Statistics is set to Yes, you’ll see the list of Search Phrases, Hits and Results. To show the number of results returned to user, click the Show Search Results button at the top of the page. The Reset button in the left top corner will erase search statistics on the page:
