Hello! This video tutorial shows how to resolve missing categories issue in your Magento store.

Magento Troubleshooter. Missing categories

The tutorial assumes you are already logged into your admin panel.

Go to Catalog ->Manage Categories tab. As you can see, we have 6 categories added there: Default Category, Cars, Bikes, Parts, Trucks and New. The New category is the one we have recently added, but if we check our store front-end it is not displayed in the category menu:

The reason is the following: by default all the categories in Magento catalog are sub-categories of Default Category. Therefore, in case you have added a new category as the root category of your catalog it will not be displayed.

Let’s make the New category appear in the category menu:

  1. Go back to your Magento admin panel category management interface.

  2. Click on the New category and drag and drop it right under Default Category.

The changes are applied automatically, so we will see the successful message in green at the top of the screen:

Let’s open the front-end and refresh the page – the New category is successfully added to our category menu:

It may happen when you accidentally remove the default category from your catalog. In this case you can always create a new root category and assign other categories to it.

However, the additional step is required in this case:

  1. Go to System ->Manage Stores tab:

  2. Then, click on the “Main Website Store” title under the Store Name section.

  3. On the appeared screen set the default category from the drop-down next to the Root Category * option. Click “Save Store” button at the top right corner to apply changes:

Categories should now be displayed in the category menu.
