osCommerce. How to install osCommerce engine and template on localhost

In this tutorial you will learn the way to install your osCommerce template on localhost

  1. After you download and unzip template package you should get similar structure

    Copy all the content of the folder osc/catalog and paste it to your local hosting root folder

  2. Now when you have it in your localhost folder you can open it with your browser by typing “localhost/yourwebsitefolder”. *It can differ for some local server software.

    Press “Continue” button to proceed installation

  3. Open your PHPMyAdmin and create new database, more detailed instructions on creating it for your local server software you can locate in you software documentation

  4. You will get similar form to fill in your database server details:

    • - localhost as you are installing it on your local server
    • - username – your database username, regularly it is “root”
    • - password – do not fill any details if you didn’t specify your password – database name

    Press “Continue” button when you are ready to proceed

  5. Now you will see that osCommerce engine is processing data, it may take some time. Please wait until you get new page

    When installation is over you should get next step – set the URL and root directory. Regularly you will not need to change anything in these fields so please skip it and press “Continue” button

  6. The next screen you get is to fill in your store details:

    • Store name – any name you want to assign
    • Store Owner name – any name you want to assign your store
    • username - any username, latin chats and numbers
    • password - use complex passwords to avoid any security issues (doesn’t really matter on localhost)
    • Admin directory name – this is the way you access your admin pane, e.g. if you change it to admin123, you will need to access your admin page by http://www.yourwebsite/admin123

    Fill in the details and press “Continue” when you are ready

  7. Now the installation is complete and you can get into your admin panel or to your shop

    Your shop may look different after installation and you need to do final step in your admin panel

    • Open your admin panel and enter login details
    • Go to Modules >> Boxes menu

    • Select any box and press “Edit” button on the top right. You will get box editing frame – the only you need to do is press “Save” button – do not change anything.
