  3. Open the form for adding a new category and fill in all the required information.

Note: most of the options are not required. To be able to save the category you need to fill in the options marked with a red asterisk.

  4. You have to add the following category options:

    • Name – this is the category name that will be displayed in the frontend and in your admin panel in category listing. In case you are using multilanguage store, you can assign different titles to the category. In order to do this, click on a small drop-down menu on the right side of the field, select the language you want and insert your title.

Note: Make sure that the name field of the default language in the store is not empty.

    • Displayed – if the option is enabled, your category will be visible in the frontend. In case you select "NO" button, the category will be disabled.

    • Parent category – this option allows you to make your category a subcategory of any of the existing categories in your store. Click on the "Expand All" button to see all the categories. By default, each new category automatically becomes a top level category in the Home category which is a default category that contains all the other categories.

    • Description – this option allows to add a content to your category which will be displayed in the top of the category page on the frontend. This field has a built-in visual editor with the help of which you can format your text. Use the language switcher to add different descriptions to the languages you have in your store.

    • Image – the field gives an opportunity to upload an image from your computer which will be displayed on the frontend next to the category description.

    • Meta title – a title used for search engine optimization (SEO) which allows the users to find the category after making a request in search engines.

    • Meta description – the description of your category which will appear in the search engine results.

    • Meta keywords – here you can insert the words related in some way to the category to help the search engines to recognize it. You can enter several of them, separated by commas, as well as expressions which must be indicated in quotation marks.

    • Friendly URL – this is a required field which gives an opportunity to assign a desired web address to your category .

      • If you leave the field empty, Prestashop will automatically use the category name for the friendly URL.

      • In case you want to insert your own URL, use lowercase letters and separate the words with hyphens.

      • Don’t type the complete store URL name but just the category name, as the domain name is automatically added to the category URL.

    • Group access – this field allows to restrict the access to your category and products for specific customer groups:

  5. When you are done with all the fields click on "Save" button in the bottom right corner of the page. The category will appear in the categories list in your admin panel.

Note: your newly created category will not be automatically added to the top navigation menu on the frontend of the site. To make it appear there, you have to add this category to the Top Horizontal Menu module in Modules -> Modules. For more details check this tutorial about managing categories in PreStashop 1.6.
