What are Website Builders?
Hey there! People often ask me, what are website builders and how do they work. Website Builders are classical example of web applications. Back in the day, you had to install an application or a software on your local computer to be able to perform the operations you needed. As the Internet advanced the technology, it became possible to built and use the applications within a browser. This is very convenient for people, because they don’t need to install anything, they don’t need to perform any operations, whatsoever to be able to access and use the software.
Website Builders as web applications
You actually use a web software everyday, for example, you use Gmail or other webmail services. You probably use Google Analytics and other interfaces. All of them are web applications. Practically, website builders are also web applications. They can be accessed within a browser window and users should not to install anything at all to be able to use them.
How do Website Builders work?
Every website builder company or provider has its own servers where the whole magic happens. Every stage of the process occurs on these servers. You create an account within the provider, you access the website builder software, you edit the website using the admin panel and you publish everything. Every stage of this complicated process occurs on the provider server. In terms of the technology, you may think that every website builder software provider has a huge server or a number of servers. Let’s think about this big server. Every person who creates an account gets an access to a certain portion of the server. Within that portion you have a certain webspace quota and you have an access to the website builder software that actually does the job for you.
In terms of the architecture, every project, that is every account, is located at the subdomain of the provider domain. For example, if you type a subdomain name mywebsite.webly.com in a browser address bar, you will get to your portion of the provider server. You may also point your actual domain, your own domain mywebsite.com that your subdomain address belongs to, and your visitors will be able to see the content of the mywebsite subdomain portion, when they access the domain mywebsite.com. So, they may not even know they are viewing something, that is actually on the website builder provider server. They may think they just access your website. That’s how it works.
